Title: Diversity and Biological Efficacy of Ethnobotanically used Polyherbal Mixtures Against Gastro-Intestinal Infections in Dera Ismail Khan

Abstract: Traditional knowledge of ethnomedicines provides basis for alternative and complementary medicine and fulfills the primary healthcare needs of indigenous people for centuries. However, the use of traditional polyherbal medicines is unexplored and poorly understood in one of the southern districts, Dera Ismail Khan (D.I. Khan) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The present study was an attempt to explore and document the use of traditional polyherbal medicines in D.I. Khan. Data was collected from 2016-2018 through interviews and questionnaires’ survey of local communities in their local languages (Saraiki and Pashto). Plant species in polyherbal mixtures were collected, identified, and deposited at the herbarium of Department of Botany, Kohat University of Science and Technology. Ethnomedicinal data was further analyzed by using various ethnobotanical indices i.e. frequency of citation (FC) and relative frequency of citation (RFC). One hundred and fifty informants (M: F=50:100) were selected, based on their experiences of using traditional polyherbal medicines. Educated female participants were actively involved in using polyherbal medicine. A total of 53 polyherbal mixtures, comprised of 71 plants belonging to 35 families were documented. Leguminosae (n=11), Apiaceae (n=6), and Zingiberaceae (n=5) dominated the traditional polyherbal mixtures. Most of the plant species were herbs in nature and fruit was the highest plant part used in the documented recipes. Mostly recipes were used for gastrointestinal ailments (n=25) followed by respiratory (n=8), reproductive (n=7), and obesity (n=6). Powder and decoction were the commonly used methods of crude drug preparation. The FC values for polyherbal recipes ranged from 2 to 21. Among 53 polyherbal recipes, 2 recipes, secured a high FC value. Three polyherbal recipes were mixed with animal product/part to treat diseases. In conclusion, study area is blessed with diversity of polyherbal recipes as an alternative source of medicine that needs urgent documentation. Scientific validation of traditional polyherbal mixtures through in vitro and in vivo studies will further deepen our understanding of traditional medicines. Polyherbal recipes used for gastrointestinal infections should be tested for common gastrointestinal pathogens. Therefore, this study provides basis and opens new doors of research for chemists and pharmacologists to develop novel and effective medicines from plant sources.
