Abstract: The 5E Instructional Model emerged as inquiry-based teaching methods by the efforts of Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS). It serves as a tool to enhance the cognitive and creative thinking of the students. The model has five phases: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation (Bybee et al. 2006). The present study “Building Conceptual Understanding of Primary School Students in Science through 5E Instructional Model at Public Sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan was sought; to find out the effects of 5E Instructional Model on Academic Performance of Grade-V students in Science and to determine the effects of 5E Instruction Model on students’ ability to retain, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create science concepts. To achieve the objectives seven null hypotheses were developed. Through cluster random sampling technique, 3 schools were randomly selected. 60 students of Grade-V from each school were selected as sample of the study. The Research design of the study was experimental containing pretest-posttest control group. Experimental and Control groups were formed randomly by odd-even method in each school. A Science Achievement Test (SAT) was administered as a pretest. Experimental group received treatment and control group was taught by traditional method. Both groups were post-tested. The data received was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. Independent sample t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that 5E instructional model has a significant effect on academic performance, students’ ability to retain, understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate science concepts. 5E instruction model has significant effect on students’ creativity. Based on findings, it was recommended that teachers may introduce 5E Instructional Model as a teaching method for science subjects in all classes. For better understanding Urdu or mother tongue may be used as medium of instruction for science subject. The v textbooks of science may be revised in relation to the 5 phases of 5E instructional model. Refresher courses may be arranged for teachers to familiarize them with 5E instructional model. The institution may provide facilities to the students and teachers for practical activities.
