Abstract: | The purpose of the study reported on in this Thesis was to identify teachers‘ and their students‘ perceptions about written corrective feedback (WCF) in public and private secondary schools in Pakistan. Moreover, students‘ reflections on the effectiveness of their teachers‘ WCF were explored. A mixed-methods approach was adopted with a sample selected from public and private sector high (secondary) schools of Lahore District. Multilevel sequential mixed sampling, non-proportionate stratified cluster random sampling technique, simple random sampling and purposive sampling were used according to the requirements of quantitative and qualitative approaches as the study progressed. Four research instruments - teachers‘ perceptions of written corrective feedback questionnaire (TPWCFQ), students‘ perceptions of written corrective feedback questionnaire (SPWCFQ), content analysis framework (CAF) for students‘ written drafts, and structured interview protocols were used to collect data. The quantitative data (teachers‘ and students‘ perceptions about WCF) were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics while the qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis techniques. It is concluded from the results that students‘ perceptions about teachers‘ WCF on their academic achievement was greater in private schools as compared to public schools. The student interviews revealed that they value teachers‘ WCF and find it helpful for the improvement of their English writing. It is therefore recommended that professional development training programs may be organized to train in-service teachers in different WCF techniques. Key Words: Written Corrective Feedback, Academic Achievement, Secondary Level, Public School, and Private School. |
