Abstract: The present study aims at exploring and evaluating the contribution of Abdul Sattar Edhi towards humanity. The theoretical lens Humanism has been applied to develop a critical understanding of the philanthropic endeavours of Abdul Sattar Edhi in Pakistani society. The research explains the Humanitarian Services of Abdul Sattar Edhi and its implications for Pakistan from a leadership standpoint. Following the teaching and practices of the Holy Prophet and his followers, Edhi started his social work from scratch and built an empire of his network(Edhi Trust) and got global fame for his contributions. The working hypothesis of this study is that philanthropic practices are essentially secular and transcend the boundaries of gender, race, religion and other ideological associations. He had a strong faith in the theology of humanism. His vision of life, commitment to serve humanity, inspiration to build Edhi Foundation, the range of services provided and the reason why he is one of the most prominent Philanthropist and Humanitarian are discussed in the study. The concept of ‗Wakf-ul-Aulad‘ is an old one and he established the Edhi Foundation which runs homes for women, rehabilitation centers, workshops for skill-based learning, dispensaries, orphanages, welfare organizations, missing person service for the people refugees‘ assistance, animal centres, morgues and burial services including graveyards, child adoption services and home for mentally sick patients across the world. He revolutionized the concept of family by legally adopting those who otherwise had no option than living on the fringes. He gave the nameless people his name as father. This study problematizes the heroism of Abdul Sattar Edhi in the context of complex Pakistani cultural structures and envisages the secular humanism as the only way forward. The study is of interdisciplinary drawing on social, anthropological and historical paradigms to interpret Edhi‘s contribution to Pakistani society in general and humanity in particular. Therefore, by applying the theory of Charisma the study explains the charisma of his personality and figures out the best possible explanations of the followership and the funding that he had got without doing any lighted and extravagant events for fund generation. He had been getting donations both nationally and internationally which had been made completely transparent and appropriately tracked. There are few articles and books which cover one or the other aspect of the Edhi and Edhi Foundation but it is surprising that not a serious academic work has been done by historians on Edhi, his organization and social practices. Abdul Sattar Edhi‘s contributions are understudied, and therefore, this study aims to fill the research gap in the historical literature of Pakistan. The study has used historical, descriptive and analytical method. Besides conducting in-depth interviews, archival material, official documents, primary and secondary sources have been utilized to reconstruct the life story of Abdul Sattar Edhi. The study has used the APA style for references, quotations and bibliography.
