Title: Development of an Outcome Based Teacher Education Curriculum for Undergraduate Program

Abstract: Teacher Education curriculum is the central element to improve the quality of education. Without improving quality of teacher education programs we cannot improve quality of Teacher Education curriculum. Quality of Teacher Education curriculum can be best improved through outcome based education. The present study was conducted to analyze existing curriculum of B.Ed. (Hons) program with respect to National Professional Standards for Teachers and indicators of outcome based education; to analyze the perception of prospective teachers, university teachers and heads of the education departments about existing teacher education curriculum with reference to outcome based education and to suggest an outcome based teacher education curriculum for undergraduate program. The population of the study comprised all heads of education department, university teachers and prospective teachers enrolled in B.Ed. (Hons) program in public sector universities of the Punjab, Pakistan. The sample of 347 prospective teachers and 86 university teachers, 15 Heads was drawn by using convenient sampling technique from (University of the Punjab, Lahore, University of Sargodha, Sargodha, Government College University, Faisalabad, Islamia University of Bahawalpur, and Ari agriculture university, Rawalpindi). Two questionnaires, a semi structured interview schedule and a curriculum analysis sheet were used as tools for data collection. The qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis technique while quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. It was concluded from analysis of the data that existing curriculum of B.Ed. (Hons) program is not an outcome based and the objectives of the program are not aligned with National Professional Standards for Teacher in Pakistan. Overall there is dire need to develop an outcome based teacher education curriculum. Moreover, an outcome based curriculum of a course is transformed and suggested. The university authorities may adopt the outcome based curriculum transformed by this study.
