Title: Role of Foliar Applied Trehalose on Physio-biochemical Attributes and Oil Composition of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under Drought Stress Conditions.

Abstract: To calculate the result of trehalose on physio-biochemical and oil composition of sunflower, two independent experiments were conducted on sunflower. The first (pot) experiment was performed in GC University, Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. This experiment was done in Botanical garden. Two sunflower varaties (Hysun 33 and FH 598) were collected from the Oil-Seed department of research centre, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) and seeds of these both cultivars were collected. In the first experiment (pot), two levels of stress (100% and 60% field capacities) were applied when 15 days were passed after the germination of seeds. Then changeable levels (0, 10, 20 and 30 mM) of trehalose were used as external spray after one month of water deficit management. Subsequent to harvest (after passing two weeks of external application of spray), various morphological and biochemical attributes were calculated. The outcome resulted that water deficiency decreased and condenced development, chlorophyll a, relative water contents, gas exchange characteristics, total soluble proteins, uptake of nutrients (Na, P and Ca) in shoot and roots as well as yield attributes such as fresh weight of achenes and dry weight of achenes, achene yield per plant, and 100- and 1000-achenes per plant. Proceedings of antioxidants such as CAT, POD and SOD and measurement of reducing and non-reducing sugars, total soluble sugars, proline contents, GB, H2O2, AsA, RMP, total phenolics and MDA increased significantly under drought stress. Foliar-applied trehalose improved growth, gas exchange characteristics, RWC, total soluble proteins, sugar levels, activities of antioxidants, proline, GB, uptake of nutrients as well as all yield parameters. Of both sunflower varaties, cv. Hysun 33 was better in enlargement, gas substitute uniqueness, fresh and dry weights of achene, sugar levels, RMP, AsA and uptake of nutrients in shoots, while cv. FH 598 was better in WUE. Moreover, under field conditions (second experiment), plant growth, gas exchange characteristics, RWC, chlorophyll pigments, total soluble proteins, yield attributes, moisture content, oil content of achenes were condensed under water insufficiency. While, proline, GB, phenolics, RMP, MDA, AsA, activities of CAT, POD, SOD as well as levels inorganic nutrients, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and α-tocopherol improved together in these cultivars underneath water deficit circumstances. Exogenously applied trehalose improved plant growth, RWC, sugar levels, activities of enzymatic antioxidants, amount of GB, Ascorbic acid, whole phenolics and full amount of soluble xvii proteins, as well as new original and desiccated weights of achenes, achene yield per plant, organic and inorganic contents in achenes, while it decreased RMP and MDA filling together in two cultivars. Among two varaties, cv. Hysun 33 was better than cv. FH 598 in terms of expansion and yield characteristics. Overall, application of trehalose was successful in growth improvement, yield of plants and oil composition of both cultivars of sunflower under water shortage conditions.
