Title: The Role of National Curriculum and Stakeholders in the Character Formation of Students and Secondary School Level of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan

Abstract: Character building is one of the prime aims of education, while curriculum and text books are the central instruments to achieve this aspiration. The objective behind the study was to investigate the efficacy of curricula and textbooks of Pakistan Studies and Islamiyat for secondary school level with respect to character building aim. Moreover, it probed the approaches of teachers and responsibilities of principals to implement the character building plan. The study employed exploratory sequential design of mixed method. At qualitative phase the analysis of curricula and textbooks was carried out. Then semi structured interviews were conducted from the curriculum experts and educationists chosen on the basis of purposive sampling. In phase second questionnaire consisting of twenty items was administered. Two hundred and thirty two (232) teachers from secondary schools were selected as sample, based on multi stage cluster sampling technique. Findings of the study revealed that curricula and textbooks of both the subjects greatly emphasize on the development of civic and moral virtues and pay less attention towards intellectual and performance virtues of character. The textbooks were found deficient of learning activities and guidelines for teachers. Moreover, it was identified that teachers do not properly focus on various aspects of hidden curriculum; and disregard the use of various teaching strategies. The study put some major recommendations to tackle the problem including proper articulation of character building aim in the educational polices; updating the curricula and textbooks with improved content by focusing on various types of character virtues, learning outcomes, sufficient practical activities, use of various teaching strategies, professional development of teachers by various means, strengthening school community relationship as well as conducting continuous research in the area of curricula of various subjects and responsible factors in order to ensure sound character building of students.
